     What we have here is a vintage Griswold Erie 6 pound sad iron. In 1865, two family members joined in on a modest venture to manufacture door hinges, which paved the way for the Griswold Manufacturing Co. The company was recognized worldwide for producing fine cast iron cookware. The designers and engineered produced have patents, spanning almost 100 years. From 1865 to 1957 Griswold Manufacturing Co. produced cookware, which was sold and used around the world. However, the company was in trouble by the 1940’s for a variety of reasons. New products were being introduced by other cookware companies that seemed to be more attractive to modern cooks. Along with problems within the company between management and employees widened and the quality of the products seemed to decline, and in 1957 the doors to the Griswold Manufacturing Co. were closed for good.

     Story:  Why is it called sad iron? First no one likes ironing. Picture this scenario: it is ninety-five degrees in the kitchen on ironing day. First you build a hot wood fire in the kitchen stove. When the fire is good and hot in the ninety-five degree kitchen which is now getting hotter with the wood stove you put a number of irons on the stove to get them hot, once they are hot you stated to iron clothing. Are you going to be happy or sad in that ninety-five+ degrees kitchen on ironing day? These Irons weight about 6 pounds each which you will be lifting all day long. Therefore they got the nick name of “Sad Irons.”
