Description
This elephant was carved in white Alabaster rock and is sometime referred to as Onyx-Marble. It was caved in Mexico in the early to mid-50 for the United States tourist trade. There are no maker’s marks or signature on the elephant however there is a sicker on the right rear foot that says “Mexico”. The Mexicans caved a lot white alabaster rock into animal’s shapes for the main reason it was an easy rock to work with. In addition, the white Alabaster rock is in abundant in Mexico and it has is a hardness of 1.5 to 2 on the Moh’s scale for rocks, and it is found in many colors. This white Alabaster elephant is nicely carved. It does have one flow on is back which I cannot determine if it was done by the maker, a flaw in the rock itself or fracture in the rock, or something could have happen to the elephant through time. Other than that, the elephant is in excellent condition with no other no cracks, chips, repairs, or stains.
