Native Americans on the west coast, which also includes Mexico, would use soapstone for cooking bowls cooking slabs, smoking pipes, and ornaments carving, and much more because of its heat resistance, and being a soft stone making easy to carve. The term soapstone referred to the soapy or slippery touch of the stone. In the craft marketplace, sculptures and ornamental objects made from soft rocks such as Alabaster or Serpentine are often said to be made from “Soapstone.” This type of stones is in colors conation from gray, bluish, green, white, and brown. This turtle has the colors of white, gray, and brown almost to a tan color. It is slippery and soapy to the touch. The eyes look like the turtle could be smoky quarts. The foot are tucked up under the shell and has the appearance of being Mexico orange. It is nicely carved with no flaws of any kind. It is in excellent condition. It is hand carved using a small rock saw and maker and date made unknown.
