Description

This Silver-Plated Hollowware Dish was produced by the Wilcox Silver-Plate Co. Originally named WILCOX BRITANNIA Co. in 1867, it was later renamed Wilcox Silver Plate Co. In 1898, the company became a subsidiary of the International Silver Company, which eventually became the largest cooperative manufacturer of silverware in the world. The International Silver Co. is not an independent silver company, but rather a conglomerate of smaller companies. The Wilcox Silver Co. uses gold and silver plating on nickel silver or white metals, as indicated by the markings “Wilcox S. P. Co.” and “International S. Co.” with cross hammers in the center. These markings may not be well-known, but they help identify the item’s date, which in this case is estimated to be between 1889 and 1910. While there is some wear on the silver-plate inside the dish, overall it remains in excellent condition.
